The Stanley Cup is like the world cup of the National Hockey League (NHL). This cup is presented at the end of the season to the team with the most points. Teams work hard all season long so that they can get a shot at winning this prestigious cup. The higher the points a team has, the better the odds, so it is essential that when teams are playing each game that they score as many goals as possible and concede as little goals as possible. Goal differences count, especially when the teams tied at the top have the same points. The team with the better goal aggregate will most likely get the cup.

It is rare that situations like that happen because as the season progresses, most teams fluctuate in points and positions due to various reasons such as injuries, politics, losing form, or transfers. A winner will therefore be clear, or people can reasonably guess who the winner is going to be based on the statistics.

The Cup Winners

The current holders of the cup are the St. Louis Blues. They managed to secure their very first Stanley Cup trophy, and it seems like they might be able to do it again soon. If the season ends the way the log stands right now, they will be runners up, not bad for a team that recently won their first cup. If the league continues at some point, they might stand a chance of winning it for the second time in a row.

Pittsburgh Penguins have won the cup 5 times in total. Three of the times were very recent, 2009, 2016, and 2017. Despite their low numbers of championships, they seem to have won it more times recently than any other team. Most teams have recorded their Stanley Cup wins in the early stages of the NHL history.
